Today Laura and Kevin speak with Nigel Cannings on all things voice tech related. We learn that Twitter trending is Nigel's fault. We also discuss the only 4 things people use their Alexa's for, plus smart transcripts and more!
Nigel Cannings is founder and CTO at Intelligent Voice. Nigel has over 25 years' experience in both Law and Technology. He is a pioneer in all things voice, holding over a dozen patents in the field, including patents for NLP and SmartTranscript.
Nigel’s work in NLP started in 2008 when he wrote the first Twitter trending tool (before Twitter). His interest in language lead him to look at all forms of communication, and he started Intelligent Voice to look at audio and video as well as email and text. Mainly due to a misunderstanding about what the art if the possible might be he released first commercially available GPU accelerated speech recognition algorithm in 2014. In part this lead to him winning the NVIDIA Emerging Companies Innovation Award on behalf of the company in 2016.
In the same year he started pioneering work on the use of CNNs of spectrograms in speech recognition: Today, AI processing of spectrograms is seen as the best way of processing audio to text. Nigel has also been recipient of multiple UK government and EU grants, which included £2.2m Innovate UK Grant for Emotional AI and NLP.
